Robot Restaurant

Bucket List Item # 104 Robot Restaurant

Tokyo, Japan

There is literally no place else like this in the world. There can’t be. It’s like Hello Kitty and Blade Runner had a baby. It’s like the 40s and the 80s and the future did drugs together. It’s like your craziest acid trip jumped out of your body, grew into a sentient being, did acid and then wrote a book about it.

This was just one of those once in a lifetime things. Well, maybe twice. Maybe more! What I should really say is that it’s one of those rare bucket list checks I would continually do again if I could. There are so many things to see and places to visit that I find it hard to revisit anything, but I know that Robot Restaurant will never get old. You could see this show 100 times and it would feel different every time. There’s so much to see and take in. The experience would be different each time.

So, what is Robot Restaurant? It’s not really a restaurant at all. I mean, they serve food, but it’s more like snacks. Is it a bar? Well, they have a bar! Is it a show? Definitely! How I would really describe it is an experience.

Entering the venue is sort of like an acid trip. Lots of colors, metallics, mirrors, patterns, reflective objects, colored lights, etc. It’s sort of sensory overload and you’re continually walking through more and more of this until you end up in this really swanky lounge. Well, swanky but totally wild. There are musicians on the stage in robot costumes singing “Fly Me to the Moon” in broken English. They seat us in a room with floor to ceiling mirrors. Our chairs are made of giant seashells and velvet and they serve us colorful drinks. Dave and I barely spoke to each other because we couldn’t. We couldn’t take our eyes off the room and the waiters and the musicians. This is better than the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Then there’s the show. We’re ushered into a sort of long arena where guests are split between two sides. The seats are like writing desks from elementary school. It starts with a light beating of drums and builds and builds until a whole brigade of men are beating on drums. It’s epic! Wow, what a show! But then from the other side comes a troupe of women on the drums, battling back and forth. It gets louder and louder and just this in and of itself would have made the money worth it, but the show continually gets wilder as the show develops. Diamond studded unicorns 20 feet tall, battling robots the size of large vehicles, coordinated robot dance routines, a laser show, colorful tanks, half naked women, dinosaurs, femmebots, geishas, acrobatics, and I could continue this list indefinitely.

And don’t let these photos decide for you. They’re shitty phone pictures from years ago before phones had good on cameras. Just Google it and see for yourself. This is one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve ever had. I mean, this has been years and I can still describe it in fairly adequate detail. Just do it!
